On the boat tour of the Adirondack lakes, we floated by several small islands like this one.

This painting was done in the studio with a two-step process.  I painted the darks with black acrylic gesso and let it dry.  Then I painted a thin warm underpainting over the gesso drawing, and finally applied opaque light colors using thick strokes.
