Last week I was at  Barnwell State Park, thanks to the SC Parks Artist in Residence Program.  The weather alternated cloudy and clear as Hurricane Matthew approached.  My sister (who lives in New Zealand) was with me for a few days.  She wrote and I painted, and we enjoyed catching up with the news during mealtime chats.

After Matthew blew through Friday night, a neighboring cabin had three trees through the roof and power was out, so I decided to come home early and free up a cabin at the park.  I appreciated the efforts of Park Manager, Eddie Richburg and all of the rangers to make my stay safe and comfortable.

As I drove back to Columbia, I saw many fallen trees and power outages.  I’ve also seen people mourning fallen trees on social media, so I’m dedicating my exhibition at Still Hopes to the loss of cherished trees from the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew.  The painting above, Marsh Edge, honors the palmettos along the coast that are so resilient through hurricanes.
