The sabal palmetto is the state tree of South Carolina and gives us the nickname “The Palmetto State”.  These  trees remind me of trips to the South Carolina and Georgia low country to paint.  The skinny vertical trunks support wild topknots of fronds that sway and rattle in the breeze.  Palmettos are very sturdy, able to thrive in the ebb and flow of the salt marsh and survive hurricanes. I like the ones that retain the bootjacks, and I’m attracted by the long shadows cast by early morning light.
