Irises are a favorite subject. In this painting, I’m experimenting with complementary colors of yellow and blue-purple.

Though April showers may come your way,
They bring the flowers that bloom in May.
So if it’s raining, have no regrets,
Because it isn’t raining rain you know, it’s raining violets.

Because of the cooler weather and big rainstorm, today was a good day to work in the studio. Around Columbia, irises are starting to bloom and provide inspiration. Working in the studio allows me to focus on composition and complementary colors without being distracted by weather and bugs. I used pure hues in this piece to create a happy spring iris garden.

This week my cousin Pat offered me some bearded irises from her garden for painting.  The delicate ruffly pink ones contrasted beautifully with the dark reddish brown ones.

These gorgeous back-lit irises were in front of a window on the campus of Paul Smith’s College.  I saw them several times as we hurried to the dining hall for meals or off to paint a waterfall miles away.  I was afraid I would not have time to stay still long enough to paint them, so I took several photos on the run.   The next day, they were droopy and dull, so I’m glad I snapped the photos when I had the chance.

I painted this piece upside down (both the board and the photo), so I could capture the shapes and values without being distracted by what I thought an iris should be.

Yellow Irises and other small pieces are available on Daily Paintworks.  Click here to buy using PayPal or credit card.
