This pastel on black paper was inspired by the warm gold and red ochres on the houses in Roussillon. I am using hard pastels (sticks of powdered pigment with a binder) to do some simplified drawings to become familiar with the shapes and colors of the landscape. The powdery texture of the medium and the rough paper relate well to the rough stucco and old stone buildings.
