This week’s painting is another small piece from a recent trip to Hunting Island. I didn’t want to set up my easel because it was getting dark and it was quite windy on the beach. So I made a quick drawing on a piece of watercolor paper previously painted with an orange underpainting. After moving to a sheltered area, I used oil pastels to complete the painting.

beautiful!, unique and wonderful
Thanks, Glynda!
Lucinda, I really love this painting. Tell me, when you drew on the orange ground did you use color or just graphite? If graphite, how did you reference those beautiful colors away from the scene?

I made the drawing with a watercolor pencil slightly darker than the color of the ground. I walked a few yards away from the beach, sat down at a picnic table, and tried to capture what I had seen before the mental “snapshot” faded away.
