Now that I’m in my new studio I can keep an eye on the garden.   One of the first things to bloom in the spring is forsythia, sometimes called yellow bells.  This carefree shrub was a pass-along from my husband’s uncle and reminds me of my grandmother’s garden.

For this study, I used watercolor and colored pencils and borrowed the plain white background from classical botanical illustration.

Also blooming this week… hellebore (lenten rose), blue grape hyacinths, white alyssum.
