Near Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks is a small historic church, St. John’s in the Wilderness Episcopal Church. I was fascinated by the shapes and odd angles of the old tombstones. This painting started with a red ground to contrast with the greens and blues of the landscape, and was completed almost entirely on location.
