These gorgeous back-lit irises were in front of a window on the campus of Paul Smith’s College. I saw them several times as we hurried to the dining hall for meals or off to paint a waterfall miles away. I was afraid I would not have time to stay still long enough to paint them, so I took several photos on the run. The next day, they were droopy and dull, so I’m glad I snapped the photos when I had the chance.
I painted this piece upside down (both the board and the photo), so I could capture the shapes and values without being distracted by what I thought an iris should be.
