Last week I was in the North Carolina mountains at Wildacres taking a workshop from Caroline Jasper. I wanted to take her class because her use of a red ground is very similar to what I have been doing. I wanted to intensify my colors when using oils like I do when using acrylics. Caroline talked about understanding color bias in pigments to avoid mixing “mud” and emphasized the importance of value structure.
This painting was inspired by the early morning light behind the trees in the pasture and the contrast of the cool blue mountains in the distance.
