The Five Points area of Columbia, South Carolina, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The popular commercial village offers restaurants, shops, and nightlife. It was quiet when the plein air painters set up near the fountain early on a Saturday morning, although there was steady traffic at Starbucks. By the time we finished painting and were ready for critique at 11:30, the shops were open, and the place was bustling with people, dogs, and cars.
For this painting, I simplified the shapes and used color contrast and paint texture to capture the energy of the environment.
