As the weather warms up in South Carolina, I look forward to travel and plein air painting. Since I’ve been working on acrylic floral paintings in the studio in recent weeks, I thought I’d pull out my oil paints and do a few warm ups in preparation for a trip to the mountains in the near future. This small study was painted using my pochade box with a limited palette of four paint colors plus Titanium White. I painted this in the studio from a photo of Ladd Farms in Winnsboro, but used a limited palette and a 30-minute time frame to simulate outdoor restrictions. It’s not always ideal to paint from a photograph, but it’s a useful way to refamiliarize myself with supplies.
