Winter Garden Inspiration

Monoprints of parsley and yarrow

Happy New Year!

Although I enjoyed the excitement of the holiday season, I’m glad to get back to a more regular routine in the studio this week.

To get started on a new series of work, I took a walk around my garden looking for inspiration. When the leaves are off the trees, the texture of tree bark stands out. Many of the colors are muted, but there are quite a few things that stay green all winter in South Carolina. I took photos of the bark and cut some green foliage and went into the studio.

I got out my gelli printing plate and started making a big pile of prints. Thinking of bark, I experimented with ways to make texture with neutral colors. Using the green things, I found that the lacy, flat leaves of parsley and yarrow made good prints. These prints aren’t finished art, but they will be good collage materials that express the colors and textures of the winter garden.
