Practicing

This week I’m journaling about coneflower shapes and practicing gelli plate printing.

I’m incorporating stone wall shapes into the prints to ground the floating flower shapes. I’m also experimenting with stencils and layers. Gelli plate printing is not completely predictable, but the more I do it, the more I can control what happens.

I make lots of prints. The floor of my studio is covered with prints drying. At this point, the process is more about mastering the technique than about the flowers. After I experiment with many variations, I evaluate what process produces the result I want. In the future, I will use the same process with other subject matter.

Do you practice a technique using a subject matter over and over? What techniques are you practicing right now?

  1. I love these coneflowers; they are beautiful. Great work.

  2. I think it is great that you are trying new techniques and even know what will work for you. I wish I would paint more as sometimes I surprise myself but I do not seem to be committed and find I do better when away from home. I think I am working in the garden or reading books Or have too many excuses here at home
