In recent weeks I have finished a batch of ten new pieces and let them dry thoroughly. Now it’s time to varnish them.
Because my work is a combination of paper and paint, the surface may have uneven areas of matte and sheen. The varnish evens out the sheen and gives a consistent look from one piece to the next. The varnish also protects the work from dust, dirt, and UV damage. I use a varnish as a top coat instead of acrylic medium because it is less porous and has UV protection.
I use Liquitex Professional Satin Varnish, a permanent water-based product. It’s easy to clean up and doesn’t have toxic fumes. I apply a light coat with a soft brush, and a second coat a few hours later.
