Pause for Learning

Fabric collage with stitching added

As I worked on my small fabric collages that I started last week, I planned to add texture and definition with stitching. I realized I didn’t have the materials and skills to do the next step. This week I gathered embroidery floss and reviewed hand stitching patterns. I practiced using the free motion quilting attachment on my sewing machine.

On the first piece, I added stitching at random. I can see that the free motion machine work is going to take a lot practice, and my hand work is rusty as well.

For the second piece, I made color copies and I’m planning the stitching before I begin.

So I don’t have much progress to show this week, but taking a step back to learn and practice is necessary to do the next steps.

  1. I can see where you are going with this. I’ve sewn a lot but never tried my hand at free motion or even the embroidery machine stitching. My daughter does beautiful fancy embroidery stitches – I’ve never tried anything more difficult than completing a kit. If it was easy, there wouldn’t be teachers and books and a big learning curve. Go for it. I’m looking forward to living vicariously.
