Start Your Visual Journal

My favorite journaling supplies

Recently I’ve talked about drawing and painting in a journal. I keep a visual journal because language and image combine in mysterious ways. I use my journal(s) to observe the world around me, process emotions, experiment with new art supplies.

Do you keep a diary or journal? Do you use language or images or combine both? How does that practice serve you?

If you haven’t tried visual journaling, would you like to? You don’t need to consider yourself an artist or be able to draw to combine words and images. If you’d like to try visual journaling, the starting point is to find a small blank book and a black pen. Carry those supplies in your pocket as you go about your day and record what you observe.

Basic journaling supplies

Later you can add supplies like pencil, eraser, scissors, glue stick, and watercolor paints. If you want to use watercolors, find a journal with mixed media or watercolor paper. These supplies are available at arts supply stores locally or online.

Optional journaling supplies

My kit includes watercolors and several types of drawing pens and pencils. The supplies fit into a small cloth bag along with the journal and a water bottle. The bag is portable enough for me to carry outside to the patio at home or take with me when I travel.

I hope you will join me in creating a regular journaling practice as the light returns this spring.

When time and travel limit devoted art time, I love pulling out my small journaling book/supplies and write briefly. I always date and add a thumbnail sketch of something. Keep in my knitting bag with IPad, always with me.
