Design Ideas

A small (2×2″) detail of a journal page

Sometimes when I want to start a blank journal page, I refer to my library of art books. Most have exercises to teach art concepts and inspire creative thinking. This week I didn’t have an idea for beginning a page, so I found this section in Deborah Boschert’s book Art Quilt Collage. It demonstrates several design guides that could be used to design any kind of artwork.

Journaling supplies: Pencil, pen, glue stick, collage papers, date stamp, and coffee

I gathered my journaling supplies and collage papers. I copied the thumbnail designs into my journal and assembled them with collage. My collection includes catalog pages, gelatin prints, and all kinds of ephemera. As I work, I’m experimenting with color schemes and practicing design ideas. This is certainly not a great work of art, but it’s a way to enjoy the process and gather ideas for later work.
