The overcast spring weather in South Carolina brought a dozen painters to the About Face plein air paintout on Saturday. We had the extraordinary opportunity to paint at an historic plantation called Alwehav (“all we have”) southeast of Columbia off Highwary 378 near Mr. Bunky’s. The old house stands empty surrounded by huge old live oaks and magnolia trees. Read about the history of the plantation here.
As usual, the gardener in me was more interested in the trees, but several of the painters emphasized the crooked angles of the house and outbuildings. That’s part of the fun of plain air painting…. seeing how each artist sees and highlight different aspects of the same location.
