Ft. McAllister State Park (aka “Bugville”) is a favorite painting spot for our plain air group.  Wild palmettos in many sizes surround the salt marshes and cast interesting shadows.  The light changes with the time of day and the water in the marsh changes with the tides.  In this case, I was interested in the contrast of the strong shapes of the palmettos with the soft ochres of the distant marsh.

This painting is part of a series of larger studio paintings based on small pieces completed quickly on site.  Painting on location is a valuable learning experience, but painting in the studio allows me to work on a larger scale and put my own spin on the colors.
