Another delivery of fresh seasonal flowers from Boone Fox Farm is the inspiration for this week’s painting. I decided to get out my acrylic paints this time and start a painting on a 14×11″ canvas board. The captions with the photos are my thought process as I was developing this painting.

Boone Fox Farm flower delivery, June 2023
I’m setting up a still life to paint during my Wednesday paint group. This week the delivery from Boone Fox Farm has bold shapes of sunflowers, zinnias, and coneflowers.

My first block-in is loose blobs of color for the large shapes and some splattering for fun.

After leaving the paint group, I moved my setup to the sunroom at home. I’m using my portable Soltek easel, small bottles of fluid acrylics and hard pastels.

I’ve added few more details the flowers. Is it finished?
No.
The gray background makes the painting too cool and I want it to be warm and sunny.

Adding yellow in the background adds warmth and defines flower and stem shapes.

The bottom section needs to be warmer, too. Now I’m adding more details with pastels and thicker paint. A bit more of the darker green adds depth near the mouth of the vase.

Is it finished?
I think so, but I will let it rest a few days before deciding and signing it. I will also need to use a spray varnish to be sure the pastel stays on.
